Side Effects Of Generic Zocor
Simvastatin or Zocor is a cholesterol-lowering drug and helps in lowering total cholesterol as well as LDL or low-density lipoprotein. Just as it is the case with any other drug simvastatin also has some side effects such as vomiting, nausea, headache, diarrhea, muscle pain, abdominal pain, as well as abnormal liver tests. There have also been reports of hypersensitivity reactions after the usage of this drug. The most serious side effects are liver damage, inflammation of the muscle, and muscle breakdown.
Simvastatin belongs to the statin group of drugs and hence it obviously has the same list of side effects such as muscle damage and liver damage that is associated with all the statin drugs. Serious damage to the liver due to the use of statin drugs is quite rare. Very often, abnormalities are noticed in the liver tests conducted on patients who are on statins drugs. Hence, testing at periodic intervals is absolutely necessary if you are on statin drugs. Blood tests are carried out to check for abnormalities and sometimes the abnormal results tend to come back to normal even if the drug is continued. However, if the values are more than thrice the normal value, then the statin is discontinued. Liver tests are normally carried out before and after the statins are prescribed. Periodic tests are carried out thereafter if there are any concerns over liver damage. Liver tests should be ideally performed before the 80 mg dosage of simvastatin is given, 3 months after it is started, and then at periodic intervals.
Sometimes, statins can cause inflammation of muscles or it may lead to a serious breakdown of muscles known as Rhabdomyolysis. This condition can cause the release of myoglobin or the muscle protein into the blood, which in turn may lead to kidney failure and may sometimes even result in death. When it is used alone, simvastatin causes Rhabdomyolysis in less than 1% of the patients. Hence, patients are advised to contact their healthcare provider if they notice any unexplained muscle weakness, pain or tenderness after starting simvastatin.
If you take any other medication, you must inform your healthcare provider prior to starting simvastatin. You may consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional details. If you are on other cholesterol-lowering drugs such as bile acid binding resins like colestipol or cholestyramine then you must take simvastatin at least one hour prior or four hours after taking these medicines. Otherwise, these medicines may react with simvastatin and prevent its absorption to the fullest capacity. You must take this medication very regularly if you have to benefit from it. Also ensure that you take the medication at the same time every day.
You must seek medical help immediately if you notice any allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, itching, dizziness, difficulty in breathing etc. This is not a complete list of side effects and there are many more. It is important to contact your healthcare provider if you don't feel alright even if you don't notice any of these above-mentioned symptoms.
