Uses Of Generic Zocor
Simvastatin or Zocor is a cholesterol-lowering drug and belongs to the statin group of drugs. Statins are drugs that help reduce cholesterol by acting on the liver enzymes and reducing the production of cholesterol. Simvastatin helps in lowering the LDL or low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol as well as the triglycerides. LDL is believed to cause coronary artery disease. Hence when LDL is lowered then it may not only slow down but also reverse the incidence of coronary artery disease.
Statins also help in increasing the good cholesterol or HDL. When the HDL levels are raised, it will also help in slowing down coronary artery disease. Simvastatin or Zocor was approved by the FDA in December 1991.
Preparation and Storage:
It is available in the tablet form in 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg dosage. The oral disintegrating tablets are available in 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg. These tablets must be stored between 5 and 30 C and the oral disintegrating tablets must be stored between 20 and25 C.
Dosage:
The dosage will range is between 5 and 80 mg per day and is preferably to be taken in the evening. The starting dosage is usually between 20 and 40 mg once daily. Dosage will be readjusted every week.
Simvastatin is prescribed in patients who have a history of diabetes, coronary heart disease, peripheral vessel disease, cerebrovascular disease, or a history of stroke. Patients are put on simvastatin in order to reduce the risk of mortality by bringing down the mortality rate due to coronary heart disease as well as reducing the risk of a heart attack. It also helps in reducing the need for non-coronary and coronary revascularization procedures.
Uses during pregnancy:
Simvastatin is not to be used during pregnancy as it affects the unborn fetus by interfering with the cholesterol levels. Fetuses need cholesterol during their developmental stage and simvastatin will prove to be harmful as it reduces the production of cholesterol.
Zocor or simvastatin must be administered only to women who have reached child-bearing age and must not be used in children. Simvastatin may be used in women who are not likely to get pregnant.
Due to the risk of adverse side effects to the developing fetus, simvastatin must not be given to women who are breastfeeding their babies.
How to use simvastatin:
Simvastatin is to be taken orally either with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider. This medication is usually given once a day in the evening. The dosage will be adjusted by your healthcare provider according to your condition, age, response to treatment, as well as the other medications that you may be on.
