Drug Interactions With Generic Zocor
Simvastatin or Zocor is a drug that belongs to the group of statins. It is normally prescribed to lower cholesterol as well as triglyceride levels. When this drug is prescribed by the healthcare provider, it is obviously because he/she thinks that the benefits of giving you this drug is far greater than the risks associated with it. In fact, most people do not have any serious side effects with the use of this drug. However, this drug may sometimes cause muscle pain, soreness or tenderness. It may also lead to a condition known as Rhabdomyolysis.
You must contact your healthcare provider in case you develop any of these symptoms.If you develop any muscle-related problems and if it is accompanied with fever or tiredness and if there is change in the urine output, it is time to contact the doctor immediately. Simvastatin may sometimes cause liver problems as well. If you notice yellow coloration of the whites in the eyes, dark-colored urine, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting etc., may be cause for concern and you must seek medical help immediately. Sometimes, you may notice a severe allergic reaction that includes a rash, swelling, itching, dizziness, and also difficulty in breathing. If any of these symptoms are noticed, it is time to rush to the doctor.
Just as it is the case with other drugs even simvastatin has drug interactions when it is combined with other drugs. The most important thing to do is to inform your healthcare provider about the medications that you are already taking. Give them the entire list including herbal supplements, vitamins, prescription, and overt-the-counter medication etc. This will be of great help while deciding the right course of treatment for you. You must never stop, change, or readjust the dosage without consulting with the doctor. Some of the blood thinners such as warfarin can interfere with simvastatin. Simvastatin drug interactions have been noticed with some antifungal medication such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, delavirdine, and macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, and nefazodone. Among the HIV protease inhibitors are ritonavir, nelfinavir, telithromycin etc.
This medication should not be shared with the others. Lab tests should be performed at regular intervals in order to monitor the progress of simvastatin and also to check for any adverse side effects.
If you suspect an overdose, then contact the poison control center or the emergency room without any delay. However, if you have missed a dose, you must take it as soon as possible, but if it very close to the next dose then you may skip the dose that you have missed and resume the normal schedule. Ensure that you do not double dose in order to make up for the missed dose.
Store simvastatin at room temperature and keep it away from moisture and light. The storage temperatures may vary according to different manufacturers. You should never store this medication in the bathroom. Ensure that all medicines are kept out of reach especially when there are children and pets around. Even while discarding the medication, do follow the instructions.
