Generic Zocor - Precautions And Warnings
Simvastatin or Zocor is a cholesterol-lowering drug that helps in blocking the production of LDL or low-density lipoprotein as well as total cholesterol in the blood. When the cholesterol is lowered in the blood, it will also help in reducing the incidence of heart disease and prevent hardening or thickening of the arteries. These are all conditions that may lead to strokes, heart attack, or vascular disease.
Simvastatin or Zocor also has some of the off-label uses that may not be listed in the guide. Prior to starting on Zocor it is important to talk to your healthcare provider especially if you suffer from diabetes, kidney disease, underactive thyroid, muscle or any other blood-related disorders.
It is important to know that simvastatin can cause breakdown in the skeletal muscle tissue and may also lead to kidney failure. If you experience any unexplained muscle tenderness, muscle weakness, or muscle pain, you must inform your healthcare provider immediately. You may sometimes notice a dark coloration in the urine or flu-like symptoms. At such times, you must immediately contact your healthcare provider.
Zocor or simvastatin may sometimes cause birth defects in the unborn fetus. The usage of this medication is not advised during pregnancy. If you are on this medication, you must ensure that you use an effective form of contraception. Talk to your healthcare provider in case you become pregnant while you are taking treatment.
In case you suffer from some type of liver disease or if you are nursing a baby, do not take Zocor.
While you are on simvastatin or Zocor, avoid consuming fried foods or food that is high in cholesterol or fat. If you do not follow up the treatment with a proper diet, simvastatin may be less effective in lowering the cholesterol levels in the blood. Alcohol consumption must be avoided while taking simvastatin because alcohol can raise the levels of triglyceride. Alcohol may also damage the liver when you are being treated with simvastatin.
Warnings and Precautions
This medication should not be taken by those who are allergic to simvastatin and is not recommended in nursing mothers or pregnant women. Avoid taking the medication if you suffer from liver disease. If you have any of the following conditions talk to your healthcare provider before taking simvastatin. Some of the conditions include:
- Underactive thyroid
- Diabetes
- Muscle disorder
- Renal disease
If you suffer from any of the conditions mentioned above, you might have to go through additional tests or you may need a readjustment of dosage.
This is an FDA pregnant category X medication, which means it can cause birth defects. So, the use of simvastatin is not advisable during pregnancy. It is still unclear if simvastatin passes through the breast milk. In case you are breast-feeding a baby, do tell your healthcare provider about it. Simvastatin is also not for use in children below 10 years of age.
This medicine should be taken exactly as per the advice of the healthcare provider. It should never be taken in larger doses and it must not be taken for longer periods of time.
